Opening Ceremony!

Where: Just inside the Academic Building

[In a wide open hall with banners and a various sundry of celebratory items, the headmaster's rousing speech begins to come to a close.]

In short, you all are here to save our world! There is a threat out there that we must face, but we cannot face it alone. [His demeanor is pleasant, but thinly veiled. His stress is evident in his words, but he is attempting to stay cheerful.] We must do our best to watch over our friends and family and neighbors, no matter who they may be.

We are all responsible for one another. [He lets the silence hang for a moment before letting off and overly cheerful--] HaHa! [Was that a bit forced? Or was it just me?]

Well, guys, it’s time for me t’go, got lotsa stuff to take care of bein’ headmaster and all. But please, get to know one another, go check out classes, and find out where you live on campus! [He gestures to various sections of the room, all labeled with bright colored papers and text.]

I’ll see y’around!

[And with that, the headmaster is off! No, seriously. Watch him go, he’s movin’ fast for such a short guy.]

...No. there was something like that underground, once, but it's gone now. Maybe.

...Yes. The Mist makes me think of it, which is why I came here. To beat it.

Look! The garden. [She sounds relieved to change the subject.]

[M.K. nods. It's a similar reason to her own for coming to the academy. She takes a peek into the garden.]

Are you really going to stay here?

Why wouldn't I? [...She hasn't actually looked inside the dorms yet, but--] It has to be better than inside walls.

Inside isn't so bad. I mean, I totally get wanting to be near the plants, especially if you're really tied to a forest, but there will be other people there, too.

I'm not even sure if the teachers will say that it's okay.

People where? Inside the dorm-place or inside the garden? I don't want to be near people unless I need to.

[Aisling just kind of flings herself into the garden.]

I don't care what the teachers say.

[She shrugs a bit. If Aisling was more comfortable outside, then who was she to argue?]

I think they're just trying to keep up the "we're a team" idea going.

I haven't been in a team before. [She and Brendan were a team, right?] At least without more than one other person. I'd rather stay out of it.

How will classes help us fight the Mist?

That part I'm not really sure about.

I think we'll need to read. [She sort of slithers into a bush and then pokes her head out of the side.] I've heard of a book that can turn darkness into light.

Well something like that would definitely be useful. Where did you hear about it?

My best friend, Brendan. He helped make it.

...I saw some pages, but he had to run away before he could really show it to me.

So...he's not here then?

[aislingoftheforest]

...No. I would've brought him, but I don't know where he is. [And she looks pretty forlorn now.]

Hmm. Maybe he'll show up later. Something like that book would really help out I think.

[aislingoftheforest]

I hope so. It's been a year since we last met. I don't know how the Book really works, though.

[Long pause.]

I can't read very well.

[barelyknow]

Hm. I don't know if they have basic reading classes here...

But maybe they do. It wouldn't hurt to ask, right? And if they don't there are plenty of people who already know. Maybe you could get a tutor.

I will.

...What's a tutor?

[barelyknow]

Um...they're like a teacher, except they can help you one-on-one. Instead of being in a classroom full of students.

Oh. Yes, that sounds good.

I mean, if you don't find anyone better I could probably help you out.

People can read a lot more here than where I come from. Brendan said most of the commoners couldn't read, only the monks. And then everyone here can.

I guess it all just depends on where you're from. I wouldn't mind helping you out. That's what we're all supposed to do here, after all.
