[In a wide open hall with banners and a various sundry of celebratory items, the headmaster's rousing speech begins to come to a close.]

In short, you all are here to save our world! There is a threat out there that we must face, but we cannot face it alone. [His demeanor is pleasant, but thinly veiled. His stress is evident in his words, but he is attempting to stay cheerful.] We must do our best to watch over our friends and family and neighbors, no matter who they may be.

We are all responsible for one another. [He lets the silence hang for a moment before letting off and overly cheerful--] HaHa! [Was that a bit forced? Or was it just me?]

Well, guys, it’s time for me t’go, got lotsa stuff to take care of bein’ headmaster and all. But please, get to know one another, go check out classes, and find out where you live on campus! [He gestures to various sections of the room, all labeled with bright colored papers and text.]

I’ll see y’around!

[And with that, the headmaster is off! ~~No, seriously. Watch him go, he’s movin’ fast for such a short guy.~~]

[She laughs at that.]

That's a really good point. I have no idea what mine would have to say about any of this.

Can't ask her?

[She looks down and shakes her head.]

No. She passed away last year.

[The words were distasteful on her tongue. "Passed away"? How pathetic did that sound?]

[ He slouches a bit and frowns. She did say "was optimistic." ]

Oh. ...Sorry.

[She sighed and slid down the wall a little.]

I'm just really tired about apologies.

Yeah, I guess it's pretty meaningless to say.

[ Looks down at her and rubs the back of his neck. Mood officially killed right there. ]

[God, this had happened so much back at her old school. Even if she had been unsure about going back to her dad, she had at least been glad to get away from all the awkward questions.]

Sorry. I didn't mean to talk about depressing stuff, you know?

That's okay. We were talking about moms so it happened. We'll pull a subject change.

Liiiike-- Where are you from? See? Subjected changed. Done. No more depressing.

[She smirks and then laughs.]

Right. Middle-of-nowhere-America. How about you?

Truffula valley. Wow. You're all the way across the world, huh?

Yeah. It was quite the trip.

Truffula valley. What's that like?

It's this large forest-like area filled with a special kind of tree and the most adorable animals.

Oh? What kind of animals?

Bar-ba-loots, swomee swans, and humming fish. Which would be tiny bears, beautiful golden swans, and fish that sing.

Well. I can safely say we didn't have any animals quite like that near my house. Sounds interesting, though.

I think it might be the only place with them. It's super interesting. They're really cute and clever.

[And now she's just picturing Nod riding on a humming fish of all things and starts laughing.]

[ What'd he say? Why is she laughing? He glances around the room. Is something funny in the room or-? ]

-What?

[She takes a breath and attempts to stop laughing, though a few giggles still escape.]

Sorry. Sorry. It's not you. I was just thinking of a friend. He's pretty close to animals, but I don't think he's ever seen a humming fish before.]

I don't get it. Why would that be funny?

Um, well, he's about...this big? [She hesitates before she holds her hands a few inches apart to illustrate her point. Admitting to the Leafmen was still unusual.]
