Opening Ceremony!

[In a wide open hall with banners and a various sundry of celebratory items, the headmaster's rousing speech begins to come to a close.]

In short, you all are here to save our world! There is a threat out there that we must face, but we cannot face it alone. [His demeanor is pleasant, but thinly veiled. His stress is evident in his words, but he is attempting to stay cheerful.] We must do our best to watch over our friends and family and neighbors, no matter who they may be.

We are all responsible for one another. [He lets the silence hang for a moment before letting off and overly cheerful--] HaHa! [Was that a bit forced? Or was it just me?]

Well, guys, it’s time for me t’go, got lotsa stuff to take care of bein’ headmaster and all. But please, get to know one another, go check out classes, and find out where you live on campus! [He gestures to various sections of the room, all labeled with bright colored papers and text.]

I’ll see y’around!

[And with that, the headmaster is off! No, seriously. Watch him go, he’s movin’ fast for such a short guy.]

[ He was not picturing this girl to be able to make such a squinty face. He raises his eyebrows a bit. ]

Beats me. [ Not in the market to judge names there. Technically his first one is 'The' ]

Maybe his mom was really into winter. Shouldn't you be more surprised at the fact that you got a 'Jack'? Pretty sure that makes you co-ed.

No, not really.

[Hiccup has a few designs in his sketchbook, a couple of ideas that simply won't leave his mind, but for now that's all they are. He's not entirely sure what's brought on the interest, but he raises an eyebrow at the questions and...whoa, okay. The guy was nearly as tall as his dad, if not a bit more. Hiccup actually has to crane his neck a little to look up.]

Uh, thanks. It's due for a bit of tweaking sometime soon...well, as soon as I find a forge anyway.

[He gives a light shrug.]

Maintenance and everything.

[ Of course, Jack's ducked back into the crowd by now and is well out of sight. But he snickers to himself and can't help making a reappearance a moment later, drifting in front of her on a breeze and then landing, finally, on the floor with a deft twirl of his staff.

He grins, raising an eyebrow. ]

I dunno, maybe it was a little bird?

Really to me though. Don't people just go for like a peg or one of those plastic guys or a metal rod thing? But you can get pressure on it and stuff. It's unique, I think.

[ He rests a hand under his chin, looking down at him - always down. When is he not looking down at someone is the question? He kind of likes being able to see above almost everyone's heads in the room. ]

...A forge? Hmm. I don't know if you'd find one of those around the school. Probably the closest you'd get is wherever shop class is but I doubt they're doing serious metal work and forging. I guess you could always have one made later.

[ He freezes for half a second. Maybe half of a half of a second. But come on, man, you tell him no and you're practically asking for it. He raises his hands, as though conceding. ]

Alright, fine. Have your cigarette.

[ He shrugs and turns, as though he's about to go - and then a split second later spins around and throws the snowball anyway, aiming for the face with practiced accuracy. ]

Well, that's usually how it is around my village but it had to be made this way so I could ride Toothless.

[He has no problem explaining why it's spring-loaded, folding his class list up by this point and putting it into inside of his belt since he didn't have any pockets. Hiccup makes a face when he hears that news, crossing an arm and resting his elbow against it as he tapped his chin thoughtfully.]

I figured. I guess it couldn't hurt to give it a bit of an upgrade. Everything's so...advanced here, it makes sense they wouldn't have a forge like back home.

What's a toothless? Is that a horse?

[ Village + Forge + "Advanced"? Uniforms make it impossible to figure out who comes from where based on clothes. First glance and you won't know who knows what a light-bulb is and who doesn't but that gives it away. Yikes. Poor kid. At least he doesn't smell like he's too far behind where you don't know proper hygiene. ]

You're from one of those places off the beaten path that didn't upgrade to electricity, huh? That explains some things. Wonder how many of you guys are around... I kind of thought that was just rumor stuff. But yeah, most of what you'd make with forges is all factory made now.

[ He idly yanks one of his gloves up then clasps hands together ] If you need help figuring anything out, I can lend a hand.

A dragon. Night Fury to be exact.

[Not that he knows whether or not people will actually know what a dragon, much less a Night Fury, looks like, but it's better to kind of explain at least. He can grab his sketchbook if he needs to anyway. Unlike the other villagers who only washed on laundry day, Hiccup took a bit of pride in his appearance. Hiccup inclines his head when the other guesses correctly, raising an eyebrow. What in Odin's name was a factory?]

I don't...really know what electricity and a, uh, factory [he spells out the word once, then again in Norse just to make sure he has it right] are, but I guess you hit a nail on the head.

You ride ...a dragon?

[ His tone says he doesn't quite by it. That's ridiculous. Though if it's a dragon he's assuming is toothless then that's slightly less ridiculous. Still ridiculous and he's going to remain skeptical because really? How would you even get something called 'Night Fury' to not burn you alive? He'll buy him riding a toothless one over a fully teethed one though. ]

Uhh. Hm. Well! Electricity is like everything running on lightning, I guess. It's the same stuff. And a factory is a building where machines make everything for you. [ Does he know what a machine is? He pauses then waves a hand in a circle and adds as an afterthought: ] It's a place where you make stuff that works automatically and builds other stuff. [ Nailed it. ] There! Now you know.

Our principal is a talking mouse.

[The look on his face and his deadpanned tone about the fact is pretty much everything he's going to say on the matter. There was a walking talking mouse on the stage a few minutes ago, is it really hard to believe that dragons exist somewhere? He'll never know. He blinks a bit in surprise a that, tilting his head. A place where stuff is works without you hauling a mallet and it builds things for you? Hiccup uses his free hand to elaborate his words, trying to think of the right way to word it.]

Sooooo it's like...another person working for you but it's not...a person?

[Weird.]

And electricity is like...lightning being struck by metal?

[ It's more Hiccup actually getting on the dragon than it existing somewhere, really. But talking mouse. It's hard to not let that one be plausible, he guesses. Still seems ridiculous though. Pull out a dragon and he'll buy it completely. He nods once and moves his hands like he's weighing something. He talks with them a little more than he actually speaks. ]

Right! Instead of a person you have a big metal thing that makes a lot more than a person can.

Electricity is hard to explain but that's kind of it. You should try dragging your socked feet across a carpet and then poking someone or something. You get a type of electricity like that. It's like tiny tiny lightning zaps. It's fun.

[Hiccup's a lot the same, using his hands to talk. A big metal thing sounds weird, but, well, he's probably going to see weirder so it's not that strange to think of. The image of a big metal thing replacing him in Gobber's workshop crosses his mind and he shakes his head, tilting it curiously.]

Uh-huh...whatever carpet is. If it's anything like fur then I get it.

[She smirks and then laughs.]

Right. Middle-of-nowhere-America. How about you?

[barelyknow]

[Okay. Wow. That is a lot of enthusiasm. Not to mention a lot of hair. Hm.]

Letters, actually. It's short for Mary Katherine.

It's nice to meet you too, Rapunzel.

[barelyknow]

[Her eyebrows raise as she looks unimpressed. At least she's trying to look unimpressed. Flying of any sort wasn't exactly a skill set she'd consider normal yet.]

I doubt it. Last time I checked, birds lacked the hands required to make a snowball.

[Someone riding a bird? Well that was a different story.]

Where the heck did you find snow, anyway?

[Pitch stops his pacing and his eyes widen at the sound of that oh-so-familiar voice. The sand on his Nightmare ripples and her ears fold back against her head. But soon Pitch recollects himself and the two of them turn to address The Guardian of Fun.]

Jack Frost. [His mouth turns into a crooked scowl] What a surprise to see you here.

[Pitch crosses his arms and soon smiles. Calm and relaxed, as seen in his slumping shoulders while his Nightmare looks off elsewhere.]

I work security here, along with some other duties. [The spirit wouldn't explain his other duties. Jack would retalliate, if anything. He takes out the invitation from the folds of his cloak, pointing to the mouse symbol on it.] Invited by the mouse himself.

[Pitch waves his hand dismissively.]

Not at all. I have the most confidence in this Academy to figure out how to stop this Mist.

After all, it's the most concentrated here. It's the best place to study it first hand.

Truffula valley. Wow. You're all the way across the world, huh?

[thneed]

[ He doesn't even know what a carpet is. Good gravy. The Once-ler's tapping his own chin again, giving him a really curious look. ]

You don't have little rugs? Those are the same thing. It's like a fur you use to cover the floors only it's usually made of synthetic materials or wool. ...Everyone knows what wool is, right?

[ He motions at him with one hand. All of him. ] Hey, where are you from that you don't have these yet?

[ Jack laughs wryly, rolling his eyes to the ceiling and running a frustrated hand through his hair. ] Oh, man, the mouse really is nuts, isn't he. You? Security? Suddenly I feel so safe. Not.

[ He steps lightly around the Nightmare, giving it a wide space between them to avoid any sudden attacks

See, we're supposed to be here to help. I know that's why I'm here. I'm not so sure about you, though. That 'Security' story sounds like a really lame cover-up.

[ Both hands rest on his staff now - his stance is still relaxed, his grip still loose, but the way he holds it just in front of himself he could be on the offense (or defense) at any moment. The cocksure smile disappears, replaced with a glare. ]

What are you really doing here?

[ He gives a crooked half-smile, resisting the urge to laugh. ] Jack Frost, right? I might know the guy. He is a guy, though, I gotta warn you. Not sure that was supposed to happen, but it did, so I guess you're stuck with it now, huh?

Funny enough, I think my roommate might be a girl. [ He picks his slip of paper back up and wags it around. ] Some Merida. Does that sound like a girl's name to you? Because it sounds like one to me.

[ Normally Jack might've just blown a few snowflakes around and disappeared into the crowd again, but when he realizes all that hair is attached to her he has to stop and stare, fascinated. Curiosity eventually gets the better of him.

A moment later he pops into her field of view abruptly, grinning, with a length of her hair draped over his head and shoulders. ]

That's where snow usually happens, yeah. Hey, listen, is this a really absurd wig or is this for real?

[shepherdofthefrost]

[ He grins, but doesn't intend to give away the secret just yet, pacing a little to her left with one hand in his pocket. ]

Oh, you know. Somewhere 'round here.

[ At which point he mysteriously produces another snowball from inside his pocket. He hefts it in one hand, catching her eye and then underhanding it to her gently. ] Catch!

Like you'll be much help against the Mist.

[He smiles, watching the younger spirit's caution towards the Nightmare. He lifts his hand and the Nightmare dissapates, the sand returning to Pitch's hand, disappearing into his 'sleeve' in which he dusts off.]

I'm seen here. I'm heard here. What I didn't expect was to see one of Manny's lap dogs here. [Pitch narrows his eyes, his shadow shifting , falling upon Jack himself.]

Why should I explain anything to you? [He points to his staff.] Besides, you shouldn't have weapons on school grounds.

[She gasped and reflexively held up her hands for the incoming snowball. She doesn't really catch it as much as she juggles it in her hands for a minute before she looses her rhythm and the snowball flops to the floor.]

Okay, so apparently my snowball skills have gotten a little rusty.
